Tunes Against Tuition Fees is the annual concert held by the TRU Students’ Union! This concert is our way to welcome new and returning students to campus and introduce the advocacy work that the Students’ Union and other community organizations undertake in our community! It is our hope that you will get the opportunity to hear some great bands, meet some awesome people, and find a way to plug yourself into a campaign or organization working to make our campus, community, province or country a better place!

The concert takes place on Saturday September 12th in the Campus Commons from 2PM to 6PM. There will be a selection of food truck options and displays from a variety of community and activist organizations that you can connect with! Bring your friends, lawn chairs, and blankets and enjoy some great music free of charge!

Said the Whale

Vancouver’s Said The Whale has been on a steady upward trajectory for the past six years, as relentless touring and a prolific string of releases have led to successes including a JUNO Award in 2011 for New Group of the Year and nationally charting singles. In 2013, the tireless five-piece – which includes dual songwriters Tyler Bancroft and Ben Worcester, drummer Spencer Schoening, keyboardist Jaycelyn Brown and bassist Nathan Shaw – will continue to break down doors by releasing its most adventurous and hook-filled batch of songs yet.

Rykka’s new single, “Movies,” follows up a collaboration with Zomboy and Vancouver based songwriter Mike James, “Delirium,” that has risen on the internet with over a million listens. Not to mention a hefty Peak Performance Project win in late 2013, leaving Rykka with a $102,500 pay cheque. These successes drove Rykka to write and record feverishly, and with the new single we have a glimpse of her new album.

The Katherines

Each and every day, we’re making connections that impact how we understand the world. Some of our relationships are long-lasting, guiding us through the everyday trials and triumphs with a steady and supportive helping hand. Others may be more fleeting but leave just as important an imprint, like a limited-time love affair that teaches us to live in the moment as well as when to let go. While Vancouver trio The Katherines‘ journey has really just begun, they’re already taking scope of their growth and filtering it through the prism of modern pop. Together, they’re refracting elements of rock, R&B, dance music and more into their exquisitely expansive debut LP, To Bring You My Heart.
